SAINTS & SINNERS
music from the cross to the crossroads

Blues and gospel, despite their obvious differences, have always been linked, perhaps different branches from the same tree. One developing on Saturday night the other on Sunday morning.

So many blues musicians we know and love spent their early years singing in church. We would never have had the presence, power and passion of Son House, Muddy Waters or Ma Rainy “mother of the blues” without these foundations. And of course, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, who throughout her career could handle both sides with flair, influencing music far beyond gospel and blues becoming known as “the original soul sister” and “the godmother of rock and roll”.

Inspired by all these rich influences, Ben Tyzack, Constance Redgrave & Maurice McElroy from the Spikedrivers with Fran McGillivray and Mike Burke present Saints & Sinners, a concert exploring the space and harmony between spiritual music and ‘the devil’s blues’.

Five voices, a multitude of guitars, percussion & even some homemade instruments create a world of soul, stories and soundscapes.

Join us for a foot-stomping, gut-wrenching, heart-soaring journey from the cross to the crossroads

….and all points in-between….

Ben Tyzack: Guitar, Vocals & Harmonica

Born in London but raised in the deep south of the United States, Ben’s musical style reflects these experiences. His guitar playing is an intoxicating blend, from the raw delta blues of Robert Johnson to the powerful soundscapes of Jimmy Page. This combined with a soulful voice and commanding stage presence completes the picture of a very unique artist. In 1992 Ben formed the Spikedrivers, they have released seven albums including many of his original songs. He has also composed music for Channel 4’s ‘Car Wars’ and performed with Lee Sankey, Roger Askew and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Fran McGillivray & Mike Burke

Fran McGillivray ( vocals & bass guitar ) and Mike Burke ( acoustic, electric & resonator guitars, mandola, mandolin & vocals) are an exciting and compelling duo with a strong following on the blues and roots music scene . Former founder members of the legendary Urban blues outfit So Long Angel, Fran and Mike have spent many years honing their craft and have developed a unique take on roots music and an amazing empathy on stage. They have performed at many major festivals in Europe and the UK including Rotterdam, Cambridge and Shrewsbury. They have shared the bill with artists such as Bob Dylan, Bert Jansch, John Renbourne and Elvis Costello.

Constance Redgrave: Bass Guitar, Vocals & Percussion

Born in Los Angeles of Native American roots, Constance naturally transferred her genetic tribal rhythms into the simple, rock solid bass lines that are her trademark and her ability as a compelling vocalist and percussionist perfectly complements this talent. Now living in London she has played with Otis Grand, Steve Cropper, Anson Funderburgh, Hank Wangford, Chris Jagger, Christian Death, Wes McGhee, and Boo Hewerdine.

Maurice Mcelroy: Drums, Vocals & Percussion

Born in Belfast, he came to London during the 60’s blues and soul boom. Add his passion for the colour and texture of Flamenco and African instruments and you have a very individual percussive style. Nicknamed ‘The Groove Meister’, his credits include Otis Grand, Larry Garner, Philip Walker, Robert Ward, Guitar Shorty, Wes McGhee, Kimmie Rhodes, Lee Sankey and the Earl Green Band.
